Understanding Cyberattacks

A cyberattack is an unauthorized attempt to access computer systems with the intent to steal, alter, disable, or destroy data. According to IBM, these attacks can be motivated by financial gain, political reasons, or personal revenge.

Common Types of Cyberattacks

Cyberattacks take various forms, but three of the most prevalent today are phishing, ransomware, and social engineering.

1. Phishing

Phishing attacks deceive victims into clicking fraudulent links or downloading harmful software. These scams often appear through emails, text messages, social media, or fake websites, tricking users into providing sensitive information or installing malware.

2. Ransomware

Ransomware encrypts an individual’s or organization’s data, restricting access until a ransom is paid. However, paying does not guarantee data recovery. Reports indicate a rising trend in ransomware attacks, with average incident costs reaching $1.85 million.

3. Social Engineering

Social engineering relies on deception to obtain sensitive information. Attackers may impersonate trusted individuals, such as IT personnel, to manipulate victims into revealing passwords or confidential data.

Understanding these threats is crucial for organizations and individuals to protect their digital assets.
