abc rule123 rule

The more that you read, the more things you will know.
The more you learn, the more places you'll go!
~Dr. Seuss Read with my Eyes Shut!

Reading is one of my favorite pastimes and it is my goal to instill that passion for reading into my students!! We will read all different types of literature in my classroom: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, mystery, biography, novels and short stories. Please encourage your child to read at home!

Dunlap uses the Rigby Literacy by Design Series! This series is brand new district wide and promotes reading, writing, independence, phonics, listening, spelling, grammar and comprehension! We have modeled, shared, interactive and guided reading/writing expreriences to make sure your child is learning and applying the skills they have learned! I am very excited by what this series has to offer and how inovative it is! There are 16 themes and 2 weeks is spent on each theme. This way, your child has the opportunity to not only learn the strategy or concept but apply and use it in everday activities!

  • self-monitoring
  • reflection
  • strategic reading

Please encourage your child to talk about their strategies and show you how to use them while your read at home! This is a great way to practice and a great way for you to see what they have learned!

In order to better meet the needs of all of my students we also do guided reading. This is where I am able to meet with smaller groups who are all at the same level of reading and understanding. We work on comprehension, fluency, phonics, grammar, and so much more! This is one of my favorite parts of the day because not only does your child receive more individualized attention, but it helps me to learn and reflect on what will make your child a successful reader! While I am meeting with individual groups, the other students are participating in literacy reading response activities based on an independent book at their level. They know this is a quiet working time so that I may give the group I'm working with my undivided attention. This is a tricky concept at first because I know they want to share everything with me! I just know they can do it and I always remind them I want to see what they know because I already know what I know!
