I have what is called Negley Cash in my classroom! Everyday the students come to class they get "paid" $10.00. This way everyone is rewarded at least once a day. I pay them when they have good behavior, get complimented by another teacher/susbsitute, are good in specials, etc. On the other hand, unacceptable behavior is fined. At the end of each day, I draw a name out of a box and that person gets to have the fines I have collected.
They keep their money in a Ziploc bag in their pencil boxes. If they lose their money, they know I will be sad for them, but they need to keep track of their things. I tell the children we are learning responsibility when it comes to this money. We also talked about how stealing and taking money from anyone is NOT tolerated. This is a great class so I am not worried about that. The money they earn is their money and only their money. I think it is nice when students want to share their money, but then it gets hard to keep track of who borrowed it. So, we do not trade or share our money. As an added bonus, we learn about money in second grade, so this will help to enrich their money skills.
Every Friday, I have Market Day where they can use their money to buy "passes". I tell the students right away, they do not need to remind me about getting money or about the sale because both of these things are a privilege. I also have a pretty good memory so I will remember.
Bathroom pass: $20.00
I always remind children that I let them use the bathroom in an emergency. This is just a fun pass to have. We do take 2 bathroom breaks during the day and I remind children to take advantage of these.
Sit in bean bag chair for the day: $40.00
I have a bean bag chair the students can use during their free time if they have this pass.
Write in Pen: $50.00
I have pink, green, purple, and black pens they may use if they buy this pass. When we are learning cursive they will not be allowed to use this pass, but for now, they can.
Cold Drink from Home: $100.00
They can bring juice, Gatorade, water, milk, etc. I will leave that up to them. Please do not send in a caffeinated beverage.
Hot Drink in Class: $120.00
During the winter, I will make the students hot chocolate if they have this pass. All they need to bring is a mug or cup.
Snack from Home: $150.00
This can be used at any time of the day as long as they have this pass. I do ask that it is healthy: granola bars, fruit, vegetables, fruit snacks, chex mix etc.
Stuffed Animal at your Desk for a Week: $200.00
They can bring any animal they wish for a whole week as long as it can fit in their backpacks. If their animal misbehaves, it will be sent to animal detention.
Sit at the Teachers Desk for the Day: $500.00
Yes it is true. I am giving up my desk for a whole day! I always remind the children to tell me the day before they want to use this pass so I can make sure it is all clean.
Lunch in the Classroom with the Teacher: $500.00
This pass can work three different ways. A child can purchase this for themselves and chose to eat in the classroom with me. They can get together with a friend and each pay $250.00. Finally, they can purchase the pass by themselves and then invite a friend from our class to join them.
