Classroom Management

In kindergarten, I use the following grading system:

S = Satisfactory - your child is achieving as would be expected from most children at this grade level.

I = Improving

NR = Needs Reinforcement

At the end of the 9 weeks, I test each child individually on letter and sound recognition. If the child can identify the letter and sound, they will receive an S. If the child can't, they will receive an NR. However, if the child cannot name the letter, but can pick it out of a group of letters ,they will receive an I.

The evaluation of a child's behavior and social development will use the same grading scale listed above. Grades in these areas will be based on teacher observation in the classroom, on the playground, and other areas of school.

It is felt at this age that there is no child who can be considered a failure. A child might not be developmentally ready for the objectives of Kindergarten. Any child having problems will receive additional help from the teacher, mother helpers, or a reading aide.

In Math and Writing, we are using a portfolio approach to reporting the assessment and evaluation of what each student learns throughout the school year. Conferences will be scheduled throughout the year to communicate each student's strengths and weaknesses.
