Kindergarten is using the Literacy by Design reading program. This program engages students through the use of interesting charts and big books. Each week, we learn a new letter, along with two new sight words and three vocabulary words.

As we learn our new sight words, they are placed on our “word wall” for students to refer to during the day. I encourage all parents to review these words each night with their child, as a strong grasp of these words will greatly facilitate their reading readiness. Some ideas for reviewing these words include: memory cards, BINGO (with words instead of numbers), magnetic cards on your refrigerator, shaving cream, etc…

The purpose of our weekly vocabulary words are to broaden students' understanding of new words. Students are not expected to recognize them in the same way they are the sight words.

When our decodable books come home on Fridays, please have your child locate all of the letters we are learning that week along with any sight words they know. Please put these books in a safe place and review them often. This will reinforce vocabulary words that we have studied.
