Kindergarten Management Plan
- Miss Rachel Knapp -
In kindergarten, each student is evaluated by assessments and daily observation. I use the following grading system:
S = Satisfactory (Student is achieving what is expected of a student at this grade level.)
I = Improving
N = Needs Improvement (Student is not achieving what is expected at this level. Student needs extra support in order to understand the concept(s) being taught.)
At the end of the 9 weeks, I test each individual student on letter and sound recognition. For example, if the student can identify the letter and sound, the student will receive an S. If the student can't, he/she will receive an N. However, if the student cannot name the letter, but can pick it out of a group of letters when asked by the teacher, the student will receive an I.
Students' social and work habits will be evaluated using the same grading scale listed above. Grades in these areas will be based on teacher observation in the classroom, on the playground and other areas of school.
In math and writing, students will be assessed on each objective, with their progress being recorded in a portfolio. No grade will appear on the report card for these subjects. Two conferences will be scheduled throughout the year for teachers and parents to discuss the student's progress. At the end of the year, a final evaluation of these subjects will be sent home.
It is felt at this age that there is no child who can be considered a failure. A child might not be developmentally ready for the objectives of kindergarten. Any child having difficulties will receive additional help from the teacher, aide, or mother helpers.
