Drawing Project 4

Design Problem
Create a 3-dimensional composition consisting of letters drawn with the freeform tool above and below a horizon line. These letters are connected to a vanishing point by lines. A color scheme is created through using fill effects. Finally, a new horizon line, vanishing point, and borders are added to finish the design.
Getting Started
Right click on the Drawing Project 4 template to save the target to your folder on the server. Read through the Principles of Design Guidelines. The daily goals are listed below the Principles of Design. Examples from previous years are shown on the Drawing Project 4 Examples page.
Principle of Design Guidelines
Create Emphasis (words are FOCAL POINT)
Produce Rhythm (repetition of fill effects, colors, and shapes)
  • Repeated shapes are created by the lines connecting points of letters to vanishing points
  • Repeated fill effects
    • Use two or three different solid colors
    • Use two or three different gradients
    • Use one pattern
    • Use one texture
Achieve Balance (symmetric design)
  • Shapes above and below the horizon line should appear balanced
  • Third and fourth letters should be centered above and below the vanishing point
  • Move all letters to make them equally-distanced from the next letter and from the edges
  • Rotate letters to improve use of space and to create an implicit line of a circle
Attain Unity (pick a style and stick with it)
  • Color scheme: Use an analagous, split-complementary, or triadic color scheme
  • Block letters above horizon line
  • Font letters below horizon line
Daily Goals
Day 1
  1. Save the template from the Web site and start your work in PowerPoint
  2. Key your name, computer number and hour in top, right corner
  3. Go through the Goal 1 PowerPoint presentation to see the example in PowerPoint view
  4. Draw one rectangle. Use Format - Autoshape to change size to 2" high and 1.25" Wide. Duplicate to have six total shapes.
  5. Draw block letters for the word DESIGN with the freeform tool above the horizon line
Day 2
  1. Go through the Goal 2 PowerPoint presentation to see the example in PowerPoint view
  2. Complete letter shapes for DESIGN using the Freeform tool
  3. Duplicate the six rectangles. Move them below the horizon line.
  4. Add a Text box by clicking the Text box tool then draw a rectangle. Type the letter D. Change the font to one of the approved fonts and the size to between 120 and 150.
  5. Repeat the previous step for each letter in the word DISNEY. Make sure the letters fit on top of the rectangles.
  6. Using the FREEFORM tool, trace around each letter created in the text box
  7. Delete the original text boxes after the letter has been traced
  8. Scroll back up and read about BALANCE
    • Move the letters on the slide to achieve balance (up-down/left-right)
    • Rotate the letters above and below the horizon line to form implicit line of a circle
    • ROTATING INSTRUCTIONS (Draw - Rotate or Flip - Free Rotate):
      • Letters D E above horizon line: Use the bottom right green dot to move mouse toward S
      • Letters G N above horizon line: Use the bottom left green dot to move mouse toward I
      • Letters D I below horizon line: Use the top right green dot and move mouse toward S
      • Letters E Y below horizon line: Use the top left green dot and move mouse toward N
Days 3 and 4
  1. Go through the Goal 3 PowerPoint presentation to see the example in PowerPoint view
    • Start at the bottom corners of the rectangles spelling DESIGN
    • Sketch lines from top corners until the touch another line ... the rest of that line will not show because it will layer behind
    • When all corners of the DESIGN rectangles are connected, repeat the process for the letter spelling DISNEY
Days 5 and 6
  1. Go through the Goal 4 PowerPoint presentation to see the example in PowerPoint view
    • Start at the bottom edge of the rectangles spelling DESIGN
    • With the Line - Freeform tool, trace over the triangular shapes created by the lines drawn from the rectangless to the vanishing point.
      • Not all of the shapes are triangles ... some are many-sided polygons
      • REMEMBER: Start and stop tracing at the same point
    • Move up to the top edge of the rectangles spelling DESIGN until all shapes have been traced and colored with the automatic green
    • Move down to the top edge of the rectangles spelling DISNEY and trace with the Line - Freeform tool
    • Move down the to the bottom edge of the rectangle spelling DISNEY until all shapes have been traced and colored with the automatic green
Day 7
  1. Go through the Goal 5 PowerPoint presentation to see the example in PowerPoint view
  2. Plan the color scheme for your remaining Graphic Design projects
    • Pick up the Unit 8 Notes Worksheet from the Worksheet Box on the Homework Table
    • Pick out the texture that you will use for your border and write its name on the blank red line
    • Look over the three color scheme categories for this project
    • Check the category that you will use
    • Write the Red-Green-Blue values for the three colors that will be used in your color scheme
    • REMEMBER: These colors will be used in all remaining Graphic Design projects.
  3. Fill in the rectangle and letter shapes with solid color
  4. Fill in the Freeform shapes with gradient color
  5. Draw a new horion line with the rectangle tool and fill with a two-color pattern
  6. Draw a new vanishing point with the oval tool
    • REMEMBER: Hold down the SHIFT key to draw a perfect circle
    • Draw THREE circles to create Mickey's head as your new vanishing point
    • Select all three circles and fill with a semi-transparent, gradient fill effect
    • Click the TEXT tool and key the word "by" over Mickey's head
    • Change the color of the text so it contrasts (dark color with a lighter color) with the fill effect in Mickey's head
Day 8
  1. Go through the Goal 6 PowerPoint presentation to see the example in PowerPoint view
  2. Draw two rectangles for your border
    • Click the rectangle tool and draw a rectangle the covers the entire slide
    • Fill it with the texture fill effect that is written on Unit 8 Notes Worksheet
    • Draw a smaller rectangle over the one filled with texture
    • Change the fill color of the second rectangle to white
    • Shift select both rectangles and Draw - Group them
    • Send the border to the back (Draw - Order)
  3. IMPORTANT: None of the shapes (letters, vanishing point shapes, horizon line) should go over the border
    • Select the horizon line and resize the ends to touch the edge of the white rectangle
    • Shift select the letters and vanishing point shapes above the horizon line to group them
    • Resize the group so it does not overlap the top or side borders
    • Shift select the letters and vanishing point shapes below the horizon line to group them
    • Resize the group so it does not overlap the to
  4. Move the text box with your name to any corner so that it does not overlap the border
  5. Check over the project at 100% or higher zoom for a closer look at the details for neatness
  6. Compare the project to the design principle guidelines for completeness
  7. File - Print to the color printer and click OK
