The first of the Apollo missions was only planned. The actual launch had been canceled after a tragic fire during testing for Apollo 1. Kaboom! The three Astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee had been killed from the inescapable fire.
Apollo 7 was the first manned mission for the Command and Service Module. It was also the only manned mission in the Saturn V rocket. During this mission, the crew orbited 163 times around the Earth for 10 days and 20 hours.
This mission was the first to make it to the moon and back. Therefore it is included in a list of very many first things in astronomy. Testing for Apollo 8 was extremely important.
Apollo 9 was the first manned flight with lunar hardware in orbit of the lunar module. Pilot Russel Schweickart was test for weightiness in 152 orbits.
Apollo 10 was second to orbit the moon. This mission help to get ready for Apollo 11, where a landing would take place.
Apollo 11 was the first manned mission to land on the moon. Many samples of the moon were taken. Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin took the first steps on the moon on July 20, 1969. This mission was a huge help for upcoming lunar missions. (moon landings) Neil had said the famous quote, "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
Apollo 12 was the 2nd manned moon landing. The astronauts had landed a walking distance away from the Surveyor III spacecraft. They took a piece of the Surveyor to examine what had happened over the long time on the moon.
Apollo 13 was the 3rd mission to the moon. During the trip, an explosion in an oxygen tank caused the crew to just orbit the moon without landing, as planned, and return to Earth.
Apollo 14 had landed in the planned area for Apollo 13. Pictures and samples were taken. Apollo 14 is also know for the game of golf played during the mission by Alan Shepard!
Apollo 15 was the 4th mission to the moon and the 1st time using the Lunar Roving Vehicle: used to rove surface of the moon. the Lunar Rover let astronauts study more deeply into the moon .
Apollo 16 was the 5th mission to the moon and the 2nd with the rover. Pictures and samples were taken, and experiments were preformed.
Apollo 17 was the last and 6th mission to the moon. The only trained geologists went. It was the 3rd mission with the rover. The most ever amount of samples and land area were studied during this mission.
