the chicxulub crater was buried under the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. it is center located at the town of Chicxulub,  where they named the town after the crater - as well as the translation of the mayan name, "the tail of the devil."

the crater was discovered by Glen Penfield who was a geophysicist   had been working in Yucatan for oil during the late 1970s.
