Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee

Apollo one astronauts never actually made it to space. In a test run they put pure oxygen in the capsule. then an electrical fire started and burned brightly using all the oxygen in the craft. The astronauts could not get out using the emergency exit.
Apollo 8

launched December 21, 1968

Apollo eight was the first successful Apollo mission. Even though this Apollo capsule didn't even come close to landing on the moon. Apollo eight went to the dark side of the moon the astronauts in that capsule were the first humans to ever see the dark side of the moon

Apollo13

Launched-April 11,1970

James A. Lovell, John L. Swigert, Fred W. haise

This mission was called a 'successful failure'.  During their trip to the moon the capsule's air tank exploded, leaving the astronauts with a difficult problem. How to save oxygen, and how to get back to earth. Back on earth NASA had their scientist figure out a way to fix the air tand, meanwhile the astronauts had to climb into the lunar madual, because it contained air. Finaly the scientist figured out a way to fix the air filter, and getting the astronauts home.

You also might have been wondering where Apollo missions 1-7 are. Apollo missions1-7 were unmanned space flights. scientist didn't want to take anymore chances with the live of astronauts.

Why are the Apollo missions important?

Almost everyone knows about the space race between America and Russia. The Apollo missions were the one thing us Americans beat the Russians in if the Russians got to the moon first that would make quite a difference in history.
