How It Happend
The Columbia Space Shuttle disaster happened on February 1, 2003. It's was right over Texas re-entering Earth's atomsphere. It lost all 7 of crew members. Columbia's explosion was caused by a piece of foam broke off the shuttle's external tank. The size was about as small as a briefcase. It fell off by the forces of the launch. The piece damaged the shuttle's thermal protection system (STP). The crew thought somthing may have happened but NASA said if they found an issue it wouldn't affect it at all. They were wrong. After the explosion there was a massive search for the pieces around Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas. There is a memorial of the crew in Arlington National Cemetery.
This is the mission patch of the Columbia space shuttle. As you can see it has
the last name of all the crew members sewed on to it. By looking at it you can
already get some information about Columbia.
This
a missing piece of Columbia after the explosion. Someone, somewhere found it. I
would assume in Texas, Alabama, or Louisiana considering that is where the
search took place.
This
is the Columbia space shuttle memorial in Arlington cemetery. It has a picture
of the patch graved into it. In honor of the crew. It has their last names
graved into it.
