How To Cite Sources

General Rules

Include as much information as possible for the particular work. Specific information is given below each type of source. Follow punctuation of examples exactly.

Form

The works cited page is a separate page that follows the report.  The Works Cited page should by typed in the following form:

1. Center the title "Works Cited" and type in 18 point. Change font back to 12 point.

2. Hit enter four times before beginning the entries. All entries should be typed in Courier or Arial fonts in 12 point size.

3. Arrange sources by the author's last name or by the first word of the title if no author is listed (ignore A, An, The).

4. The first line of the entry begins at the left margin.  If there is a second line, it should be indented as one would a paragraph (hit the Tab key once to indent).

5. Titles of books and major works are word processed in italics.

6.  Include at least three entries.

7.  Do Not number the entries.

8.  Be sure to follow the rules on the "Format for Works Cited" sheets.

PRINT SOURCES

Books

1. Author. (last name first; if more than one author, list in same order as on title page)

2. Title of book. (in italics)

3. Publication information: City: Publisher's Name,  Copyright Date.

Follow the formats below for punctuation and spacing. ("x"= 1 space)

Book by One Author:

        Author's Last Name,xFirst Name.xxTitle of Book.xxPublication City:x
             Publisher's Name,xCopyright Date.

Example:

James, William.  Love and Other Passions.  New York:
      Random House, 1996.

Book with Two or More Authors:

Examples:

No Author Listed:

        Example:

Magazine or Newspaper Article:

1. Author of article. (if available)

2. "Title of article." (in quotation marks)

3. Magazine title. (in italics)

4. Publication information:

-Complete date: day month year

-Section or Page numbers

Article from a Newspaper:

Encyclopedias and other reference books:

4. Date of edition.(Volume and page number not necessary if pages are arranged alphabetically)

Unsigned Encyclopedia Article:

"Title of Article."xTitle of Encyclopedia.xxYear.

Example:

Signed Encyclopedia Article:
