Researching your Topic

• Use three references from two different types of sources
• Read reference books that are available in the IRC during History class
• Visit online databases provided through the IRC; at home, remember to use the Username and password from the Online Resources bookmark from the IRC.
• Infotrac
• Britannica Online
• SIRS Discoverer
• Carlweb
• FirstSearch
• When using an Internet search engine such as Google
• Put quotation marks around your topic such as "vietnam war"
• Do not use any CAPITAL LETTERS in your search topic
• Do not use any articles from Wikipedia since the information is not reliable
• CAUTION: Internet search engines are in business to make money. Therefore, the information found might not be appropriate for school reports. Research reports need "facts" not "opinions" so always compare the information found through search engines to a book or encyclopedia.
• Follow directions in the packet to write relevant facts on note cards
• Fill in the Works Cited Chart with the correct information from the book, article or Web site that was used
