Taking Notes

  1. Write all of your notes on note cards.
  2. Write on ONE side of the card only!
  3. Write only ONE FACT and ONE REFERENCE SOURCE on each card.
  4. Take notes in your own words. This is really important!
  5. Make your notes as brief as possible. You must use incomplete sentences and abbreviations, but be sure you can understand them later.
  6. Make your notes meaningful
  7. If you find it necessary to continue the notes on additional cards for the same subject and reference, repeat the heading and source on each card and number these cards in sequence.
  8. You will need a minimum of 50 cards which will be due
  9. April 18
  10. Include on each card:
    • The name of the one specific subject or topic discussed on that card in the top left corner.
    • Notes on the material should be in the center of the card
    • Identification of the source (author's name, shortened title, website) should be in the bottom right corner
    • Page numbers where material was found should be in the bottom left corner.
  11. As you take notes, be sure you write down all needed information on the works cited chart.
