Dunlap Fishing Club

The Dunlap Fishing Club has four purposes:

1. Have Fun
2. Learn about fishing and fishing equipment
3. Get ready to compete in tournaments
4. Prepare to qualify for sectionals

** All members of the Dunlap Fishing Club must join the Illinois Bass Federation. The Federation provides one million dollars in liability insurance for its members. This is needed to protect both yourself and also the owners of the boats that you may be riding in.

Students who join the fishing club may pursue one of two options in their participation in club activities:

Option 1: The student either considers themselves a beginning fisherman/lady, or is not interested in attempting to qualify for the IHSA bass tournament. These students may attend any club activity as long as they are in good standing within the club, and the activities code, and are academically eligible. Beginner fishing seminars will be held to teach the basics of fishing, including locating fish, selecting proper equipment and bait, knot tying, casting, and fighting and landing fish. All participants must handle their own bait, and take their own fish off the hooks.

More advanced fishermen/ladies who are not interested in qualifying for the IHSA tournament may still fish in club tournaments, and compete for the club championship. This group includes spring athletes who will be unable to participate in the IHSA tournament due to sports commitments.

Option 2: The student considers themselves as an accomplished fisherman/lady, and wishes to compete to qualify for the IHSA tournament in the spring. Students who choose this route must show competence at both bait casting and spinning gear, and also demonstrate that they can tie the Improved Clinch, San Diego Jam and Palomar knots.

Students choosing this option must attend enough club activities to accumulate enough points to qualify for to compete for the club championship. The club championship tournament will be held in late September/early October on a local lake.

Club participation points will be awarded for attending club outings, seminars, and competing in club tournaments. The club will also spend at least one day conducting community service such as cleaning the shores of local lakes and streams. Club members must compete in at least one club tournament before they fish in the club championship, and attend the community service day.
