FCCLA has been very active with community service. The main project a few years ago was helping fight and prevent children illiteracy. Every Tuesday & Thursday after school a group of the club members went to the YWCA to read books to the children, and let the children read books to them. Last year, the club members went to Dunlap Grade School and Dunlap Middle School where they also help the children practice and learn to read or assist teachers with running the classroom. The club sponsors a Halloween Dance where the entry fee might be one children’s book or we have also used Coats for Kids as the entry fee. During the dance there is a drawing for lots of great prizes. The club raised over 700 children’s books that were donated to school and the YWCA. We have donated 100 coats to Coats for Kids. Some fundraisers we participated in were baking and selling Christmas cookies, selling candy canes, and selling matchmaker for Valentine’s Day. In the spring the club puts on the Prom Fashion Show. This is where local stores donate prom dresses, tuxedoes, and flowers to be modeled. The club also goes on its annual spring trip to Chicago to attend design schools, culinary schools, and art museums.
