Sociology

This is a very brief overview of the course.  Sociology is the study of human social behavior.  Positive human relationships are an essential part of a civilized society and how we interact with each other is important so that we can find answers to questions and solve problems in our world.  I am looking forward to a great semester.

Syllabus

Unit 1: Culture and Social Structure- Why should we
           study society?  What will society teach us?

  • Cultural Diversity, Conformity, and Adaptation
  • Social Structure

Unit 2: The Individual Society- Who or what influences
           who we are or what we become?

  • Socializing the Individual
  • The Adolescent and Adult in Society
  • Deviance and Social Control

Unit 3: Social Inequality- What are the benefits and
           challenges of a diverse society?
                   -Social Stratification
                   - Race, ethnic, gender, age, and health relations

 

Culminating Project:  Breaking a Social Norm

  • This project will be completed through the second have of the semester
  • Sociological Experiment Steps

Materials: You will be responsible for:
       - bringing your textbook everyday to class unless
                 otherwise notified
       -  a notebook
       - a writing utensil everyday
       -Optional (although highly recommended) a flash drive
                 for culminating project
