Grading Procedures

The grading system in second grade will be very similar to first grade.   The report card follows the same format.   Students will not receive letter grades in any subject.   Reading, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Art, Music, and P.E. will be graded as follows:

S          Satisfactory (Progressing well at this time)   If an area is not marked on the report card it indicates satisfactory work.

N          Needs improvement (Additional reinforcement is needed)

Indicates a weak area within a given subject.

+          Indicates a strong area within a given subject.

Math and writing progress will be evaluated using the portfolio assessment procedure.   You will receive a checklist for math and writing to indicate your child's progress.   Many math papers and writing samples will be placed in each child's portfolio and shown at the two parent conferences or sent home with the report card.

Not every daily paper is graded.   When the children are learning a new skill I will check, but not grade, a paper until I feel there is a better understanding of the concept.   If a paper is done together, a T is placed on the paper.   An x- is put by an answer that is left blank.   When a paper is graded, you will usually see the number correct out of the possible number.   If it is followed by a +, your child scored 80% or above on that paper.   If a - is next to the score, your child scored below 80% on the paper.    Papers that are below 80% are often corrected with the teacher during free time in class.   Papers may be sent home to correct.   If a paper is sent home, please return the paper the next day so I can recheck it. A note will be on the paper to indicate that it needs to be corrected and returned.    I will try very hard to return the children's papers as soon as possible.   Most papers are returned the next day.   This allows you to monitor your child's progress through daily work.    Please check your child's bookbag daily.

Following directions is a very important part of completing work pages.   Directions are read together and key words marked with a highlighter.   Children are not left to fend for themselves.   For the first four weeks of school, papers will be returned to be corrected if the directions are not followed.   Then it will be graded.   After the first report card is sent home, the papers will be graded as is.   Papers must also be done neatly.   Those not done neatly will be done over.   These papers are completed during recess.    Everyone is given ample time to complete the work so there is no need to hurry.
