Homework
There is some homework in second grade, however,I try to keep nightly assignments to a minimum since our students are still only 7 and 8! Below is information about the homework given in second grade.

Reading
There is a weekly reading assignment in second grade. Students are assigned a story out of our old red reading book. The students are expected to read the story aloud to a parent/sibling/grandparent, etc. during the week. There will also be a homwork sheet to accompany the story. The homework sheet is to provide practice in reading comprehension. On Friday, students are expected to take an AR test on the story and turn in the homework sheet. If a student does not pass the AR test additional comprehension activities will be sent home.

Math
Although there is not weekly math homework, at times during the year there will be additional practice sheets sent home. In order to practice our math facts there will be addition "M&M" cards and subtraction "Skittles" cards. Students will be expected to practice their math facts for a total of 60 minutes over the course of the week. Once they have returned the card they will receive a bag of M&M's or Skittles for their hard work. Additionally, as we begin to learn about new concepts, such as regrouping, time, and money, practice sheets may be sent home. Students will be informed of the homework and expected to return the homework the following day.

Spelling
There will be a weekly spelling test given on Fridays. Plese practice the words throughout the week with your child.

Monthly Activities
Each month there is a poem and reading card. The students are expected to learn the monthly poem and recite it to me by the end of the month. The students will receive a certificate at the end of the month for saying the poem. The monthly reading card keeps track of how many minutes the students have read each month. Once the student has turned in the monthly reading card they will receive a Book-It certificate for a free pizza.

Cursive
During the second semester of second grade the students will be taught cursive handwriting. I ask that you please do not teach your child cursive before then. Bad habits can form and be very hard to break. Once we have started cursive there will be nightly practice pages over the letters we have learned each day. These pages will have a star on them. The pages are to be completed that night and returned to school the next day. If a child does not complete the homework they will stay in at recess the following day to complete the work.
