Second Grade Objectives:  
 

Students will

•  Manipulate media and tools to create and complete a work of art using: paper, scissors, glue, crayons, markers, oil pastels, chalk pastels, watercolors, tempera paint, clay, glaze and acrylic paint.

•  Continue to develop their hand-eye coordination and demonstration of skills.

•  Participate as a member of a group, and practice appropriate social interactions

•  Apply creativity, imagination, and problem solving skills.

•  Examine and analyze the historical and cultural implications of art

•  Appraise and assess their work as well as the work of other students in an appropriate fashion.

•  Take Joy in discovering their unique ability to create art.

       
Exploratory Activities Include:  
 

•  The recognition and implementation of lettering processes as communication tools

•  Identify a contour line as it defines the shape of a space

•  Discover the source and uses of organic lines

•  Produce linear patterns to create design

•  Demonstrate crayon resist and understand the differences in material properties which cause the resist to happen

•  Apply a branching pattern

•  Identify media and tools and how to use them in a safe and responsible manner

•  Identify distance through proportion and horizon lines

•  Identify and illustrate line, shape, color, texture, and space as elements of design

•  Demonstrate symmetry and A-symmetry using the technique of double-cutting and composition

•  Understand the similarities and connections among the arts through cross-curricular projects

•  Construct a three-dimensional paper sculpture

•  Transform geometric shapes into a recognizable object

•  Demonstrate “parts to whole” concept

•  Manipulate clay to produce a three-dimensional form using the “pulling” procedure.

•  Explore the chemical and physical changes undergone by a piece of clay when fired and glazed

•  Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of images as stories through group activities

•  Describe differences between works of art through inspection, analysis, and interpretation

•  Identify distinctive roles of artists and audiences

•  Differentiate between abstraction and realism

•  Understand color mixing and recognize color families (primary, secondary, warm, cool, and complimentary)

•  Create a point of emphasis using complimentary colors

•  Expand a basic form into a more sophisticated one

•  Demonstrate the artistic process of weaving

•  Show how the principles of repetition and pattern produce rhythmic quality

•  Identify the expressive qualities of mood, emotion, and pictorial representation

•  Compose a variation on a theme

•  Illustrate originality, imagination, and creativity to invent a unique piece of art

       
Second Grade Art Historical figures  
 

•  Name Vincent Van Gogh as a famous artist and recognize a piece of his work

•  Name Henri Matisse as an important modern artist and recognize paper cutouts as some of most famous work

•  Name Georgia O'Keeffe as an important female artist in the history of art and recognize oversized flowers as a unique element in her work
