First Grade Objectives:  
 

Students will

•  Illustrate through their work; sensory elements, organizational principles, and expressive qualities of art.

•  Manipulate media and tools to create and complete a work of art using: paper, scissors, glue, crayons, markers, oil pastels, chalk pastels, watercolors, tempera paint, and clay.

•  Complete an artistic process to the best of their ability

•  Participate as a member of a group, practicing social interactions

•  Apply creativity, imagination, and problem solving skills

•  Appraise and assess finished work as well as the cultural and historical role of art

•  Take Joy in discovering their unique ability to create art.

       
Exploratory Activities Include:  
 

•  Identify the following elements of art: space, line, color, shape, and texture

•  Identify compare and contrast geometric and organic designs, Manipulate shapes; arranging and assembling parts to the whole

•  Identify primary and secondary color families

•  Identify and implement the principles of repetition, pattern, and elaboration

•  Examine examples of historical symbols and how we can recognize and celebrate cultural diversity.

•  Demonstrate knowledge of character drawing, distinguish facial features to show expression, use color for interpretation

•  Describe and implement the crayon resist process.

•  Transform ceramic clay into an aesthetically pleasing object, manipulate material using stamping and incising techniques, discover texture as an element of design, analyze changes in clay during the kiln firing process.

•  Construct a three dimensional form from a flat surface, creating an original piece of sculpture.

•  Recall the concept of still life, and apply skill of overlapping to illustrate distance and spatial relationships, as well as organizing their composition in a balanced manor

•  Use literature to dramatize differentiation of characters, identify and experience the media and tools for tempera painting

•  Demonstrate how to use horizon line in a picture to express distance on a flat surface, and interpret characteristics of a season.

•  Analyze patterns and designs in nature, construct and assemble parts to whole, and express mood through color

•  Demonstrate double-cutting, recognize positive and negative space, employ lateral symmetry, and organize a spatially balanced composition

•  Observe and compare linear qualities of design, select and apply variations, and create original patterns

   
First Grade Art Historical figures  
 

•  Name Henri Matisse as a famous artist; describe components of Matisse's work as well as the variety of work he produced.

•  Name Vincent Van Gogh as an important artist, examine his unique painting style, identify the expressive qualities of mood and emotion, demonstrate understanding by producing an original piece of work in the style of Van Gogh

•  Identify Mondrian as a famous artist, recall his use of primary colors, and translate Mondrian's style into an original work
